Lawyers of the Orissa High Court and other courts across the state boycotted courts today in protest against moves by some opposition parties to bring in an impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, a bar association leader said here.
The move for a statewide protest was initiated by the Orissa High Court Bar Association yesterday after a meeting of its general body.
"Responding to our requests, the bar associations of all the 30 districts of the state passed uniform resolutions and boycotted court activities for one day in protest," Orissa High Court Bar Association secretary Satyabrata Mohanty said.
The statewide protests show that the lawyers' community disapproves and condemns the move initiated against Justice Misra, Mohanty said.
The leaders of several opposition parties are said to have begun consultations on initiating impeachment proceedings against the CJI.
Justice Misra's career in the judiciary started from the Orissa High Court in the late '70s.
