Seeking two more battalions of BSF jawans, Odisha Police today said it had decided to intensify the anti-Maoist operation in Koraput and Malkangiri districts.
"In recent times the Maoists have lost base in Koraput and Malkangiri districts and are in the back foot. But we can't be complacent. It has been decided to intensify our anti-Maoist operation and for it we need at least two more battalions of BSF in Koraput," Director General of Police Sanjiv Marik told reporters here.
"The additional forces will fill the prevailing gap in our counter insurgency operations as several places in Koraput district we don't have permanent camps of the central forces," the DGP said after a holding review meeting with high officials.
Prior to reaching Koraput, the DGP had reviewed the Maoist situation in Malkangiri district and had held discussion with
top officials as how to speed up development activities in the district with better coordination with the police and civil administration.
"Construction of bridge over the river Gurupriya is in full-swing and once it is completed at least 151 villages situated across the Balimela reservoir will get good connectivity with the outer world and development activities will penetrate in those areas," he said.

In the past few years the state government's several attempt to construct the bridge over the Gurupriya had turned to be futile as the Maoists had halted the project as the bridge would hit their movement in the area. However, with deploying security forces, the state government had restarted work for the bridge since September 2014.
According to the DGP, construction for a SOG training centre is on in Koraput and once it is completed strength of SOG personnel in the state would be increased.
The DGP also stressed on the effective functioning of the reception counters which were being opened at police stations across the state.
"Instructions have been given to the district SPs to ensure that the reception counters opened at police stations functions effectively. Anybody who comes to the reception counter to register a complain will be provided with a receipt," he said.
