Of 42 Bengal ministers, 9 have criminal cases against them

Out of the 42 ministers in the newly formed West Bengal government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, nine have criminal cases pending against them and over half of them are crorepatis.
According to a report by West Bengal Election Watch, based on analysis of the affidavits, nine of the ministers have declared criminal cases against them out of which seven have serious cases like murder, kidnapping, communal disharmony etc, registered against them.
Over half of them (57 per cent) are crorepatis with Jakir Hossain having assets of over Rs 28 crore, the richest among all ministers. He is followed by Disaster Department Minister Javed Ahmed Khan and Finance and Industry Minister Amit Mitra.
Churamani Mahata is the poorest of them all with declared assets worth over Rs 5 lakh.
The report said the average assets of ministers is Rs 3.36 crore.
The educational qualification of the ministers show that a total of 33 (79 per cent) ministers are graduates or have higher degrees while nine ministers have education qualification of 12th pass or below.
The youngest minister is former cricketer and Youth Affairs and Sports minister Laxmi Ratan Shukla, aged 35 years, from Howrah Uttar constituency.
