A CBI court here today convicted a senior auditor of the office of the Principal Accountant General, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and sentenced him to one-year rigorous imprisonment in a graft case.
The anti-corruption branch of CBI here had registered a case based on a complaint of an official of District Munisif Court, Thiruvarur in Tamil Nadu, last year.
It was alleged that S Sampath Rao, Senior Audit Officer in the office of Principal Accountant General for Tamil Nadu and Pudcherry, while inspecting the audit-accounts of the court, demanded Rs 5,000 as illegal gratification for not making any remarks and to avoid raising audit discrepancies, a CBI release said.
The alleged bribe amount was reduced to Rs 4,000 subsequently and Sampath Rao was arrested while accepting the bribe amount.
He allegedly passed on the cash to N Adhimoolam, Assistant Audit Officer in the inspection team who also accepted the amount. However, Adhimoolam was acquitted.
A fine of Rs 10,000 was also slapped on Sampath Rao.
Additional Special Judge for CBI Cases S Jawahar delivered the judgment.
