Revenue and customs officials of this district are investigating whether Rs 5000 crore had been brought in a container in a ship to the port here.
Officials said today three ships have been searched but nothing has been found so far.
District Collector M Ravikumar said they were verifying the information whether currency had been brought through Tuticorin port and whether it had been offloaded.
With the state going to the polls on April 24, the Election Commission had already initiated several steps to curb transport of unaccounted money.
