Two escalators have become operational at the Old Delhi Railway Station as part of an endeavour by Northern Railway to provide better facilities to passengers.
The two escalators have been installed on Platform No.16 at the station, Anurag Sachan, Divisional Railway Manager (Delhi Division), told PTI.
Platform 16 handles important and high-demand trains like the Kaifiyat Express, Mussoorie Express, Unchahar Express and Shalimar Express, among others.
The escalators, which were commissioned yesterday, have a capacity of 9,600 passengers per hour and can work in both directions. They have a standing capacity of 68 passengers each and move at a speed of 0.5-metres per second.
The escalators have important safety features like emergency buttons at three points to enable quick intervention during any obstruction.
Also, these escalators come with energy saving sensors which enable them to slow down to half speed after 180 seconds and thereafter to stop at 30 seconds in case of no users. As soon as users are again detected, the escalators resume movement.
About 100 escalators are being installed at various busy railway stations in the country of which 16 will be provided by Northern Railway.
