The Dean of a medical college here has been booked for extortion and criminal intimidation on the basis of a complaint filed by a doctor working under him, police sources said today.
Anant Dongre, Dean of Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College who is due to retire from service tomorrow, allegedly demanded through his aide Rs 20,000 from the doctor for not taking action on a complaint filed against the latter by relatives of a patient, they said.
Dongre's aide Umesh Girme threatened the doctor, Prashant Chakrawar, and told him he would be sacked if he failed to pay the money to settle the patient's complaint, the sources said.
Chakrawar works in the college's Psychiatrist Department, where he joined on August 13, 2014. His wife is also a doctor in the hospital attached to the college.
The 34-year-old physician alleged that Dongre mentally tortured him and his wife on "silly grounds" and threatened to sack them if extortion demand was not met, the sources said.
"Last evening we registered an offence against the Dean and his aide under IPC sections related to extortion and criminal intimidation," the sources said, adding a probe was on in the case.
