Superintendent of police (city) Vivek Syiem told PTI the incident took place at sunset yesterday when Lumjingtip Lyngdoh was near his forested agricultural land at Nongtrai village.
Lyngdoh heard some sound nearby and thinking it was a wild animal, he opened fire from his licensed SBBL gun. The bullet hit Thomas Syiemlieh, who was hunting birds and the sound was made by him.
The man booked under relevant sections of the IPC for culpable homicide, police said and ruled out any personal reasons for the incident.
