One labourer killed after under-construction bridge collapses

One labourer was killed and atleast seven others injured after an under-construction bridge on a national highway collapsed in Chhattisgarh's Korba district today, police said.
The incident took place this afternoon when around 50 workers were at the site of the bridge being constructed on a rivulet on NH-130 between Katghora and Ambikapur, Korba Superintendent of Police D Shravan said.
The spot is located near Podi village under Katghora police station limits, around 50 kms away from Korba town.
A portion of the cement slab of the under-construction bridge caved in that left one worker identified as Naveen Sai (25) dead on the spot and seven others injured, three of them critically, the SP said.
Soon after being informed a police team was rushed to the spot and the injured were rushed to a local hospital and the body of a worker was retrieved from the debris, he added.
The deceased hailed from Jharkhand, said police.
The reason behind the incident was not immediately known and a probe was on in this connection, he said.
As per the local government officials, the road construction work is underway on NH-130 between Katghora and Ambikapur and a private company Dilip Buildcon has been given its contract.
