The draft of the proposed ordinance was ready and expected to be issued in a couple of days, Medical Education Minister A Ramdas told reporters here today.

The rural service would become mandatory for doctors who have secured seats in medical colleges under the government seat quota, he said.

While those MBBS graduates who refused to serve in rural areas would be slapped with a penalty Rs 10 lakh, the PG diploma holders would be fined Rs 15 lakh and Post-Graduates Rs 25 lakh, he said.

The bill to replace the ordinance would be introduced in the next assembly session slated to be held in July, he said.

Ramdas said the government had decided to sell medicines to poor and middle class offering 50 per cent discount through Janata Bazaars in its hospitals.

The first such outlet would commence operation in the state run Victory Hospital complex here and extended to 20 centres next month, he said.

Government has held talks with pharma companies like Cipla, SunPharma and others and they have agreed to supply medicines at reduced rates to help poor, Ramdas said.
