A woman has lodged an FIR saying she was cheated over Rs 2.5 lakh by one person whom she had met on social media, the police here said today.
In her complaint, Dikme N Sangma said she had accepted a friend request from an unknown person on social media in December last year and that friend cheated her of the amount on the pretext of sending her gifts and money.
"He asked me for my full address which I gave. Some days later I got a call from a lady who stated that my parcel had come and I needed to pay Rs 19,500 to an account to clear the papers. I deposited the amount," she said.
Later she received another call from another number claiming that she needed to deposit Rs 1.6 lakh as government tax, which she again deposited, the woman from Dalu area of West Garo Hills district said in the FIR lodged yesterday.
"Despite payments of so much money, I have not received any parcel or money. I have been cheated," she said.
West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Dr MGR Kumar confirmed that an FIR has been filed.
"We are awaiting complete details of the money deposits done. The case is currently under investigation," said Dr Kumar.
