Only 2 pc of 6-14 age group out of schools in Bihar: govt

Only two per cent of children in the age group of 6-14 were still out of schools in Bihar and efforts were on to enrol them by the next academic session, state Education Minister P K Shahi said today.
Through sustained special drives, most of the children in the age group of 6-14, for whom the Right to Education Act of 2009 is meant, were now attending school in Bihar, Shahi said in reply to a question of JD(U) MLA Poonam Devi Yadav in the Assembly.
Those left out would also be brought to schools by the next academic session in a bid to register 100 per cent achievement in this direction, the minister said.
The Nitish Kumar government was sincerely implementing schemes like mid-day meal and bicycle programme to motivate children to go to schools, particularly in the interior rural areas, he said.
According to official figures, the annual growth rate in primary enrolment was 3 per cent in Bihar during 2006-07 to 2011-12. Total enrolment in primary level was 149.34 lakh in 2011-12 which had increased from 125.49 lakh in 2006-07.
Bihar government was also expanding infrastructure in the sector. The total number of primary and upper primary schools in the state rose to 68,323 in 2011-12 from 67,865 in 2007-08.
The number of teachers at primary and upper primary schools rose to 3.38 lakh in 2010-11 from 3.19 lakh in 2007-08.
