: The Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB) partner programme, the Malayalam Project, will conduct an open house on the January 31 allowing visitors to interact with the project's research, design team and collaborators.
The open house will be held from 9 am to 8 pm at the exhibition site on 292B Lily Street, near Fort Kochi's Parade Ground.
The exhibition on typography and graphic design, looks at language through literature and script. Key passages from the writings of authors, poets and journalists of the 20th century, themed around "women characters in published texts", are etched on the walls, or printed on paper and cloth. There are also videos featuring women reading out passages from these texts. The exhibits have a stark poignancy, tinged with black humour when read as stand-alone pieces.
"This open house, which is an all-day event, could be a conversation starter for those who work in the Malayalam medium and graphic design," said Theresa George, curator of the project. "People can interact with all the collaborators on the project, and talk about how the graphics of the language can be user-friendly for the younger generation. This project, because of the nature of what it is, has already connected with the local community."
The Malayalam Project is put together with the archives of graphic design studio Thought Factory and design store ViaKerala, and in collaboration with KMB '14 director of programmes, Riyas Komu.
