Speaking in Rajya Sabha during the vote on the Opposition -sponsored motion against FDI in retail, he said one should not politicise any government policy which helps the nation.

"Pained" at the way in which both the parties were criticised, he said, "We all know that SP under the leadership of Mulayam Singh Yadav and BSP under the leadership of Mayawati have become well-established national parties.

"It is not fair and justified to criticise their respected leaders that they have supported the government on FDI. The Opposition is trying to criticise them very adversely and sarcastically. It is not good in Parliamentary democracy," he said.

Government today defeated the motion against FDI as BSP voted in favour of UPA. SP, which has nine members in the House, staged a walkout expressing dissatisfaction over Commerce Minister Anand Sharma's reply.

Reddy accused the Opposition of trying to stop each and every economic policy that the government plans to undertake in the interest of the nation.

"Whenever our Government takes any economic reform in the interest of the nation, the Opposition opposes it as they are doing in the case of FDI multi-retail.

"Government after having extensive studied and taking into account all the pros and cons of FDI multi-retail have decided to allow 51 per cent FDI. UPA found that as on today steep inflation and insignificant inflow of foreign exchange is making our economy in serious problems," he said.

Terming the opposition's apprehension that entry of foreign retail chains will wipe out small shops as "totally wrong", Reddy said it in turn will help the farmers.

"I would like to say that opposition Benches have formed some apprehension that all the existing retail shops and small stores will be wiped out if multi-national foreign companies enter India and set up their big stores and malls. It is totally wrong.

"The Opposition has a misconception that the organised sector (small traders) constituting 24.4 crores in the country will be wiped out. It is totally wrong... There is another apprehension in the minds of the Opposition that farmers will be harmed extensively by introducing multi brand retail big malls or stores by multi-national companies which is totally wrong. In fact, farmers will be helped," he said.
