"This is a very sensitive issue and the government should have shown some sensitivity in dealing with it. It has not given any time frame on when will it solve the issue, there is no assurance. The government has failed to handle this," former Union minister and Rajya Sabha MP (Congress) Ashwani Kumar told reporters outside Parliament.
SP leader Naresh Agarwal said the Centre was misleading the students by not giving any specific time frame to sort out the issue. "There is PM's consent in having English in the UPSC exam. Otherwise the government would have given a specific time frame to solve the issue," he said.
"The students are being beaten up by police and charged (with offences) under various sections. The government should first stop these atrocities and withdraw cases against them.
"The government has been taking anti-Indian language stance and in such cases where these students go? Should they leave the country for not knowing English," Yadav said.
The BJP slammed the opposition, but also lashed out at the police for beating up the students. "We strongly condemn the police atrocities. The protesting students are not Taibans or terrorists for the police to beat them up.
