Organisers booked for negligence after injury to 3 swimmers

A day after three young swimmers got injured during a competition, Gurgaon police today booked the organiser of the event for negligence even as an inquiry was ordered into the matter.
A case in this regard has been lodged at Badshahpur police station.
The incident occurred yesterday morning during a two-day district-level swimming competition, organised by Gurgaon Swimming Association under the supervision of its president Sandeep Tokas at the CRPF camp in Kadarpur village, police said, adding that over 250 participants from various schools took part in it.
They were made to dive into a swimming pool where the water level was not safe for diving, police said.

Sagar Rana (12), a state-level under-14 swimmer got seriously injured in the neck, spine and back and is currently battling for life at AIIMS trauma centre in Delhi, police said, adding that Jasmin Singh and another swimmer also got injured during the competition.
"We have directed the District Sports Officer to look into the incident and submit a report. The priority of the administration is to save the boy. The administration will bear the expenses of his treatment," Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner TL Satya Prakash said.

"The organisers should have made adequate arrangements. The water was hardly three-foot deep at one end of the pool and as the participants jumped into it, they hit the floor head on," said Rana's father Ravinder Malik who lodged the police complaint.

Besides mismanagement, lack of man-power and failing to put in place adequate safety measures, the organisers have been accused of not bringing the event to a halt, despite injuries to two participants during the warm-up session.
Tokas has been booked under sections 336 (endangering the lives of others) and 337 (negligence) of the IPC, police said, adding that a hunt was on to nab him.
