"The National e-Transaction Count, which represents number of transactions at national and state level e-governance projects including mission mode projects has grown significantly and are at the level of 1519 million during January-July 2014," Communication and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
He added that the number of Internet users in India increased to 221 million till June 2014 growing from 21 million in 2005, while number of websites had risen from about 0.17 million websites to 16 million websites during the same period.
Saying that the trend in increase in cyber incidents is similar to that worldwide, a total of 62,189 security incidents including fishing, scanning, spam, malicious code and website intrusions were reported to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) in 2014 till May.
"During the years 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 (till May), a total number of 21,699, 27,605, 28,481 and 9,174 Indian websites were hacked by various hacker groups spread across worldwide. In addition, during these years, a total number of 13,301, 22,060, 71,780 and 62,189 security incidents, respectively, were reported to the CERT-In," Prasad added.
