Of the total authorised strength of 6,154 IAS officers, 4,377 posts are filled, Minister of State for personnel, public grievances and Pensions V Narayanasamy told Lok Sabha in a written reply.
Of the total, maximum 216 vacancies are in Uttar Pradesh, followed by Madhya Pradesh at 118. The total authorised strength of IAS officers in UP and MP are 592 and 417 respectively, he said.
Besides, out of the total of 337 posts in Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-UTs (AGMUT) cadre, 221 are filled.
Narayanasamy said 128 posts are lying vacant in Bihar, 112 in Rajasthan cadre, 100 in Jharkhand, 92 in Andhra Pradesh, 80 in Karnataka, 78 in Odisha, 70 in Manipur-Tripura, 69 in Tamil Nadu, 60 in Punjab, 56 in Kerala, 55 in Maharashtra, 54 in Chhattisgarh, 52 in Gujarat and 46 in Jammu and Kashmir among others.
He said the Centre has received requests from some state governments for increasing the quota for IAS officers in view of their increased administrative, social and other obligations towards the people.
The proposals of the state governments are being considered as per the provisions of IAS (Cadre) Rules, which mandates the union government to re-examine the strength and composition of IAS cadres in consultation with the state government at the interval of every five years.
In reply to another questions, the minister said 1,101 IAS and 1,492 Indian Police Service officers have attended training abroad during the last three years. PTI AKV SCY
