"As per the information received from the District Project Societies, 12,15,755 children have been rescued/withdrawn from work and rehabilitated and mainstreamed under the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) scheme from its inception in 1988 to December 2016," the labour ministry said in a statement.
The scheme is sanctioned in 270 districts of 21 states, out of which Special Training Centres (STCs) are, at present, operational in 104 districts, Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
The volunteers for the special schools are engaged by the NGOs etc, for which they are paid a consolidated amount of honorarium.
