Over 130 Nepalese women have been rescued from central Nepal while being trafficked to India in the past one year, an NGO in the country said.
Maiti Nepal, an NGO working against women trafficking, rescued 136 women from Chitwan, one of the major trafficking points to sell women to brothels in Indian cities, the organisation said.
Among the rescued, 102 women were being trafficked with intent to sell them while 34 others were rescued to avert risk, said the NGO's regional programme officer, Yuvraj Dawadi.
The women rescued from Chitwan hail from Gorkha, Dhading, Lamjung and Nuwakot districts.
"The anti-trafficking organisation has been running various awareness programmes. It has also set up information centres by roadsides to carry out random checking during which it has been successful in rescuing trafficked women," he said.
