Over 200 auto rickshaws plying in the city without permit and flouting pollution norms have been impounded by Guragon Traffic Police, officials said Wednesday.
The action was carried out Tuesday during a special campaign in which challans were issued to 535 errant auto rickshaw drivers under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1989, within days of the Haryana government banning more than 10 year old auto rickshaws in the city, a senior official said.
"The action was taken against auto rickshaws which were plying without permits and Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, and auto rickshaws which were older than 10 years," Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Himanshu Garg, told PTI.
"Overall 535 challans were issued and 205 auto rickshaws impounded on Tuesday," he said.
Garg said similar campaigns are being carried out by the traffic police here with an objective to improve road traffic situation and check pollution.
"We recently carried out a campaign to check wrong-lane driving/riding and raised awareness about it. Today, a similar action is underway against vehicles jumping red lights," he said.
