"As per information provided by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 7,862 children were kidnapped in 2008, followed by 9,436 in 2009 and 11,297 in 2010," Minister of State for Home Affairs Jitendra Singh said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.
The total number stands at 28,595.
During the same period, a total of 1,84,605 children were reported missing as per an information provided by NCRB, the minister said.
"Ministry of Home Affairs had issued an advisory on missing children on January 31, 2012, wherein states/UTs have been advised on various measures needed to prevent trafficking and trace the children. These include computerisation of records, DNA profiling, involvement of NGOs and other organisations, community awareness programmes, etc to facilitate tracing of missing children," Singh said.
"An advisory on July 14, 2010 has been sent by the Centre government to all state governments and UT administrations wherein they have been advised to ensure all steps for improving safety conditions in schools and institutions, public transport used by students, children's parks and play grounds, residential localities and roads," he said.
"It has also been advised that the crime prone areas should be identified and a mechanism be put in place to monitor infractions in such areas for ensuring safety and security of students, especially girls," Singh said.
