Over 58,000 Kashmiri migrant families in country: Govt

"There has been large scale migration of families from Kashmir Valley in 1990. There are 58,697 Kashmiri migrant families registered with respective relief authorities. These include 38,119 families in Jammu, 19,338 families in Delhi and 1,240 families in other places," Minister of State for Home M Ramachandran told Lok Sabha in a written reply.

"Various measures have been taken for relief, rehabilitation and return of Kashmiri migrants. These include grant of enhanced cash relief with effect from July 2009 at the rate of Rs 1,250 per head per month subject to a maximum of 5,000 per month per family of four or more members for migrants staying at Jammu.

"Government of NCT of Delhi is also giving cash relief to the needy families at the rate of Rs 1,250 per head per month, subject to a maximum of Rs 5,000 per month per family of four or more members. Other states have been providing relief to migrants in accordance with the rules in vogue in their states," he said.

The minister said concessions have been granted to Kashmiri migrants for extension in date of admission, relaxation in cut off percentage, increase in intake capacity, reservation of at least one seat in the merit quota in technical/professional institutions, waiver of domicile requirement and facilitation of migration in second and subsequent year by the ministry of Human Resource Development.

"For facilitating return of migrants who are willing to come back to the Valley, a comprehensive package of Rs 1,618.40 crore has been announced in year 2008 which provides for assistance for repair/renovation of damaged houses. Transit accommodation, continuation of cash and rations relief, students' scholarship, employment in government and financial assistance for self employment, financial assistance to agriculturists and horticulturists and waiver of interest on loans," he said.
