Over 70 per cent J&K connected by roads under PMGSY

"71 per cent connectivity level has been achieved so far which stood at 58 per cent before the inception of PMGSY in the state," Commissioner Secretary Roads and Buildings Tanveer Jahan said during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here last evening.

The proposed connectivity level by the end of Phase-VIII of PMGSY is expected to be 80 per cent, she said.

"Out of 9,933 habitations as per Census 2001, as many as 5,770 were connected before the inception of PMGSY. As many as 1,267 habitations were connected up to Phase-VII of PMGSY while 2,125 habitations are being covered under the Phase-IV of the programme," Jahan said.

The Commissioner Secretary said 1,913 schemes have been sanctioned to construct 9,662 kilometers of road length under the scheme. More than 3,320 kilometers have been constructed so far, she said.

534 projects involving Rs 1,248 crores have been approved by the Union government under Phase-VIII and IX of the programme.

She said tendering process has been initiated and 60 contracts have been awarded so far, while 126 more projects have been cleared by the Empowered Committee under Phase-IX.

Earlier, the Chief Minister underscored the importance of the Online Management, Monitoring and Accounting System (OMMAS), designed as a web portal, to put complete data and the status of PMGSY in the public domain.

He said the initiative would bring more transparency in execution and completion of works wherein, "Anyone from anywhere can access OMMAS to know all about schemes under implementation under PMGSY."

He also asked the department to provide complete data to the system and update it regularly for general public information.
