Railways collected over Rs nine crore as penalty as over ten lakh people were fined for littering station premises from 2013 to June 30 this year.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu informed the Lok Sabha that a total 10,98,107 persons were penalised and an amount of Rs 9,54,84,033 collected as penalty for littering at railway premises in the last three years.
Keeping in view the expectations of the passengers and to meet the challenge, Railways has adopted measures which include introduction of mechanised cleaning process, award of ragpicking/garbage disposal contracts, introduction of pay and use toilet scheme, Prabhu said in a written reply.
National Green Tribunal had made observations regarding littering on railway tracks and had ordered joint inspection by railways and municipal corporations for placing dustbins at all the identified sites and to prepare guidelines for handling municipal solid waste arising in the rail areas of stations and tracks.
He said inspections by various officials at the railway stations are also conducted to monitor cleanliness and take remedial measures.
Rules have been notified to penalise persons affecting cleanliness and hygiene at rail premises.
