R K Pachnanda, a senior IPS officer from West Bengal, has been appointed as head of Operations in paramilitary CRPF.
The officer was recently in news after his name figured in a panel of senior police officers to be appointed as Additional Director of CBI.
However, the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, appointed another officer for the vacant post at the premier investigating agency from a pool of senior officials.
Pachnanda, a 1983-batch IPS officer, has been posted as the Additional Director General (Operations and Works) in the Central Reserve Police Force, the country's largest paramilitary with close to 3 lakh personnel in its command.
The officer will oversee anti-Naxal operations, counter-insurgency tasks and other law and order duties rendered by the force across the country.
Sources said after CBI appointments were cleared, Pachnanda was deputed for a stint in the paramilitary which was cleared by the Union Home Ministry and CRPF headquarters recently.
Pachnanda, during his earlier tenure at the Centre, had served as an Inspector General in BSF (Eastern sector) and he also had a stint as the Kolkata Police Commissioner.
