The Universal Studios project, a long-delayed sequel to 2013 blockbuster, was initially set for a summer 2017 release, reported Aceshowbiz.
Steven S DeKnight will direct the project from a script by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham.
John Boyega is signed to star as the son of Stacker Pentecost, a character played by Idris Elba in the first movie.
Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni and del Toro will produce the film along with Boyega and Femi Oguns through their production company, Upper Room Entertainment.
