Senior Superintendent of Police Farooq Awan was on his way to home in his bullet proof car when a bomb apparently planted in a motorcycle triggered off.
Awan has been admitted to a private hospital and is said to be in critical condition.
He had been working with the Special investigation unit and anti-terrorist cell since last three years.
Awan also led the investigations in the Daniel Pearl murder case that led to the arrest of Sheikh Umar who was involved in the kidnapping and beheading of the Wall Street Journal journalist in 2002.
Chaudhary Aslam was killed in a bomb blast while Shafiq Tanoli was also targeted in a bomb attack in the city.
Around 150 policemen have been killed in the largest city of Pakistan this year in target killings by militants who have retaliated against the officials involved in the ongoing operation against terrorists and criminals.
