At least one person was killed and 25 others were injured in celebratory gunfire across Pakistan's largest city Karachi to mark the country's Independence Day, officials said today.
Citizens resorted to indiscriminate aerial firing at several places of the heavily armed city to express their joy at the 67th Independence Day.
A police official of the central control office said one person was killed and 25 injured by stray bullets.
Firing was also reported in certain areas of the garrison city of Rawalpindi though there were no reports of anyone getting hurt.
The day dawned with special flag hoisting ceremonies in Islamabad and the four provincial capitals.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was the chief guest at the Independence Day celebration in Islamabad. He participated in the flag hoisting ceremony with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
In his address on the occasion, Sharif promised to fix all problems and put Pakistan on the path to development.
