A book written by Calcutta University Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das 12 years ago was today banned by authorities in Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province for containing "offensive material".
The provincial government banned the distribution and sale of "Kashmir and Sindh: Ethnicity, Nation-Building and Regional Politics in South Asia" and declared "all copies of the aforementioned book as forfeited to the government forthwith".
The ban was notified by the Home and Tribal Affairs Department of the restive province, which is ruled by the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf party led by former cricketer Imran Khan.
The notification did not give details of the "offensive" material in the book published in 2001.
According to the publishers of the 220-page book, Das "provides a fascinating study on the issue of ethnic politics in multi-ethnic Third World countries and the non-convergence of state and nation, using the Kashmir and Sindh models".
