Enraged over his absence from duty for two months despite them facing drinking water problems, around 100 residents of a village today locked up their panchayat president in his office room before police came to his rescue.
Residents of Gangavalli village had not been getting water supply for the past two months and were angry with panchayat president Periyadurai of PMK as he was not coming to office and solving their grievances, police said.
When Periyadurai came to the panchayat office today, a day after the voting for Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu, agitated people gheraoed him and locked him up in his room.
On getting information about it, police rushed to the village and removed the lock put by the public and freed Periyadurai, who remained confined for about two and a half hours.
A case was registered against around 100 people under IPC section 147 (rioting) and 188 (disobedience), police said adding the agitators were detained briefly.
