The West Bengal State Election Commissioner A K Singh has asked the police administration to take stern action against those involved in clashes over panchayat poll nominations in various districts.
The Left Front, the Congress and the BJP have accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of letting loose a reign of terror in order to stop opposition parties from filing nominations for pancahayat polls. The TMC has termed the allegations as baseless.
"It has come to notice that clashes in different districts are taking place (in connection with panchayat polls). I am to request you to take stern action against the culprits at this stage otherwise it may flare up," Singh said in a letter to all police commissioners and SPs of districts last night.
The Calcutta High Court on April 12 had stayed till further orders the ongoing panchayat election process in the state.
