Pandole, seeded in the fifth to eighth slot, registered the first upset of the competition when he overcame Senthilkumar, seeded in the third to fourth slot, 3-2 after leading 2-1. Senthilkumar fought back to force the decider but Pandole held on to the slender lead to win the match.
In the same category, top seed Mahdav Dhingra survived a tough contest against Mudit Pant, who was seeded in the fifth to eighth slot, to reach the semifinals.
Among the girls, J S Krithica of the Indian Squash Academy, Chennai caused the other upset of the day when she shocked second seed Avani Nagar of Mumbai 3-1 in another tight contest organised by Willingdon Sports Club.
