The Committee was formed to suggest ways to improve the image of Congress in the wake of its poor performance in the bypolls held for 18 assembly segments and one Lok Sabha seat last month.

Raising awareness about welfare programmes of the government and installation of statues of former prime minister Indira Gandhi in weaker section colonies were also among the suggestions made by the Committee.

The panel, headed by state Roads and Buildings Minister D Prasada Rao with 10 ministers as its members, submitted its preliminary report to Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy and state Congress president Botsa Satyanarayana today.

The panel, which heard the views of other ministers, party MLAs, MLCs and other senior leaders in the last one month since its constitution, made 34 recommendations to the government and 17 to the state party leadership.

The state government should conduct the local body polls at the earliest and the legal hurdles in the process be overcome without delay, Prasada Rao told reporters after submitting the preliminary report.

Observing that the people appeared to lack awareness about the numerous welfare and development programmes being implemented by the state government, he said the way the schemes are being implemented be reviewed and the public made aware of them for their benefit.

The YSR Congress of Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy had swept the bypolls by winning 15 assembly constituencies and the lone Lok Sabha seat. Congress managed to win just two assembly seats. (More)
