A pangolin, an endangered animal, was today found dead in a well in Ghatkohka range near Mohgaon road village in Pench Tiger Reserve's buffer zone area, a forest official said.
Pangolins are also referred to as scaly anteaters and are mammals of the order Pholidota.
The male Pangolin, about a-year-old is categorised as rare and extinct, Pench Reserve's Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF) K S Sengar said.
The pangolin's carcass was spotted by villagers in a well near a roadside eating joint in the buffer area following which they alerted forest staff.
The officials seized it and sent it for post-mortem as per the rule. The viscera and other body parts will be sent for forensic tests.
Sengar said that it appears that young pangolin was separated from its mother and later fell in the well. The carcass appears to be two days old.
The animal's last rites will be done as per the NTCA guidelines, Sengar added.
