Par panel lauds TN performance in free legal aid

Tamil Nadu is among the best performing states in implementing free legal aid programmes and alternative dispute resolution, Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee for Personnel, Adminstrative Reforms and Judiciary Sudarsana Natchiappan said today.
Speaking after the committee members led by him reviewed the functioning of the free legal aid cell at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court here, he assured the members of lawyers associations that he would recommend for enhanced legal fee for legal aid cell advocates.
Natchiappan and other committee members including senior lawyer K.T.S.Tulsi, Rajini Patil, A.Sampath, P V Nayak, Varaprasadha Rao, heard the views of the advocates and free legal aid cell's members.
Justice Tamilvanan told the members that Tamil Nadu was in the forefront in implementing the legal aid cell programmes and alternative dispute resolution programmes through mediation and conciliation centre and Lok Adalat. This reduced the pendency of casess in the courts.
Natchiappan told newmsen later that all poor people should get free legal assistance and pitched for creating awareness about it.
He would recommend to the government to incease the allocation for the free legal aid cell and alternative dispute resolution mechanism.
He said the committee would also take efforts to make Tamil as official language of Madras High Court.
Later talking to newsmen at Pasumalai, he said the committee would recommend to the government to fill the SC/ST backlog vacancies in banks.
