A para-teacher was Monday shot dead by unidentified assailants while he was returning home from school at Saharpur village in Jharkhand's Pakur district, a police officer said.

Three empty cartridges and a motorcycle were recovered from the spot, where he was killed, he said.

"Maheshwar Hembram (40), a para-teacher in Upgraded Middle Bhillai-Barmasia School in the district, was on his way home when the assailants pumped three bullets into his head and stomach, killing him on the spot," he said.

Local people spotted Hembram's body and informed the police, the officer said.

According to the officer, Hembram's paternal uncle told police that a land feud or an illicit relation could have led to his killing.

"Police are probing the case from all angles. We will be able to give more details in the case only after further investigation," he added.
