West Bengal Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim today said the much-awaited flyover from Parama Island on EM Bypass to Park Circus will be commissioned well before the coming Durga Puja festival to ease heavy traffic congestions particularly to and from the city airport.
Conceptualised way back in 2003 by a committee set up by the Transport Department, the flyover connecting Parama Island and Park Circus finally began in February 2010 after a long delay and was to be commissioned by August 2013.
With the commissioning of the over nine km long flyover with its ramps connecting the surrounding areas, there would be a huge cost overrun for the project from its initial cost of Rs 320 crore, due to delay in implementation by two years.
The minister expressed hope that the massive traffic snarls stretching from the EM Bypass and to Park Circus connector would be eased after the longest flyover in the city, constructed by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), was opened for public use.
