A bench of justices Aftab Alam and Ranjana Prakash Desai issued notices on the petition filed by a Dalit woman Priscilla Pandian, through advocate Rajaraman seeking action against the police personnel allegedly responsible for the incident.
The incident according to the petition was unprovoked as a massive gathering of Dalits had assembled at the place to pay homage to their leader Emanuel Sekaran who was murdered by caste Hindus on the same day in 1957.
The crowd had turned restive over the arrest of another Dalit leader John Pandiyan who was proceeding to the venue, when police resorted to firing.
"The 2000 strong police force selected from elite battalions of Tamil Nadu police had clearly exercised undue force disproportionate to the situation," the petition said.
