''I am concerned about the prevailing tax structure and I call upon all states in the region to arrive on a consensus to decide on parity,'' Brahma said inaugurating the meeting of the Committee on Rationalization of Motor Vehicle Taxes with the North-Eastern States here.
The tax process should be hassle-free and must not hinder the free movement of vehicles, he said.
Brahma said 3,000 new concrete bridges have replaced the old wooden ones and more than 25,000 km of roads have been constructed in the state.
Deputy Secretary (Transport) to the Union Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways, Nandan Singh said since there was variation in the tax structure among different NE states, the centre had constituted a committee so that all states can adopt an uniform tax structure.
The matter was discussed with various principal secretaries and commissioners of transport department of the NE, he added.
The meeting was organized by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (Transport Wing), Government of India.
