BJP national vice president Parshottam Rupala today filed his nomination papers for Rajya Sabha seat from Gujarat which fell vacant recently after the death of the Congress MP Pravin Rashtrapal.
Sixty-one years old Rupala filed his papers at the Assembly Secretariat in Gandhinagar today in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, state BJP chief Vijay Rupani and several other state ministers and BJP leaders.
"Tomorrow is the last date of filing nominations. Rupala has filed his papers today. We have not received any other nominations yet. Election will be held on June 11," said Gujarat Assembly Secretary D M Patel.
Rupala, who hails from Amreli district, is considered an influential Patel leader from Saurashtra region.
He has been the state BJP president (2006-09) as well as a Rajya Sabha MP (2008-2014). He also served as a minister in Gujarat Government from 1995 to 2002.
Congress has not made any announcement about its candidate yet. "No decision has been taken yet by the high command. We shall wait till tomorrow," said Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi.
Even if Congress fields a candidate, Rupala's victory is almost certain as BJP enjoys a majority in the Assembly with 121 seats out of total 182.
