Passenger amenities at Guwahati railway station to be upgraded

Amenities at the Guwahati Railway station are poised for a major uplift which will benefit passengers and rail users of the region.
NF Railway CPRO P J Sharma today said the Railway Ministry has entrusted a central public sector undertaking, IRCON to bring about a visible improvement in passenger amenities through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund.
To improve the passenger amenities, it has been proposed to provide a Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant of 2,000 litres per hour capacity for safe drinking water at platform nos 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Two hydraulic lifts would be installed for easier access to the Foot Over Bridges, there would be carts for old persons and persons with disabilities, and renovations will be carried out in the existing toilets in waiting halls, retiring rooms and dormitory, Sharma said.

Flexible steel dustbins would be provided throughout the station for improving the existing garbage disposal system, while the circulating area at Guwahati station would be provided with retro-reflective road markers, solar studs and one way spike breakers.
Stating that there would be new retro-reflective signage at different platforms for better guidance to passengers, he said the Railways was also trying to improve the platform surface by using Kota stones, which would help in mechanised cleaning.

More CCTV cameras would also be provided for improving the security of the station, the CPRO added.
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) would be shortly entered into by the NF Railway and the IRCON for implementation of these passenger amenity improvement works at Guwahati, the largest station of the zone and a gateway to the Northeast, Sharma said.

IRCON International Limited officials led by its General Manager, Eastern Region, B Sarkar accompanied by Lumding Additional Divisional Railway Manager S Nayar inspected Guwahati station yesterday as part of the ongoing Passenger Facilitation Fortnight, he added.
