A large number of people, especially school-going children and employees, were affected as about 2,500 buses went off road in a protest by Himachal Road Transport Corporation against the Centre's new bill on road safety and transport.
The 24-hour strike was called to protest Centre's 'Road Transport and Safety Bill, 2015'. No HRTC bus was on road and also the buses from other states did not enter Himachal, said Shankar Singh, convener of Joint action Committee of HRTC Employees unions.
The school-going children were a harried lot as private buses were overloaded and large number of parents had to hire private taxis to send their children to schools.
However, 2800 private buses and taxis were on the road and people mainly depended on private transport.
All the major transport Unions affiliated to All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), BMS, INTUC, HMS had supported the bandh call.
