Seeking an allocation of at least Rs 5,000 crore for Odisha in upcoming railway budget, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today said his government was committed to supporting all rail infrastructure projects in the state.
"The gross earning from various stations in the state of Odisha is estimated to be in excess of Rs 14,000 crore during 2014-15. I would request you to kindly ensure allocation of a sizable part of this year's railway budget allocation for strengthening and expanding rail infrastructure," Patnaik wrote to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.
Stating that he had already proposed a package for Odisha to be considered by the Railway Ministry, Patnaik said "this package of Rs 5,000 crore includes detailed proposals for enhanced provisions for ongoing projects, sanctioning of new lines, upgradation of major stations, surveys, introduction of new trains, improved passenger amenities at stations, on board services and others."
Noting that Odisha has emerged as the most favoured investment destination in metal, mineral and power sectors, Patnaik said the nature of industrial activities in the state required a robust rail infrastructure for its sustainability.
