Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today said his government is committed to improve the quality of education at state-run schools for the benefit of underprivileged children.
Speaking at a private institute's award function, the chief minister lamented the declining standards of government schools and said he was striving to enhance the same.
Reiterating his government's commitment to uplift the underprivileged, especially in fields of education and health, Amarinder said former prime minister Manmohan Singh has studied at a government school and went on to become a world- renowned economist.
It was the quality of education that made the difference, he said.
Amarinder said teachers' contribution to the development of youngsters could not be undermined.
Though the education system is changing fast across the world and one could not predict where things would be 25 years from now, the foundation built now would help them through their lives, he said.
The chief minister said he felt honoured to shake hands with the youngsters who had made the state proud with their achievements.
