PCI seeks T'gana chief secy's report on scribe's detention at
Press Trust of India New Delhi Taking cognizance of an incident at the Hyderabad Central University (HCU), where a reporter was detained and restrictions were imposed on the media, the Press Council of India (PCI) today sought a report from the authorities concerned, including the Chief Secretary, Telangana.
PCI Chairman Justice (retd) Chandramauli Kumar Prasad expressed grave concern over the January 17 detention of Kunal Shankar, a reporter of 'Frontline' magazine, during his coverage of an event to mark the first death anniversary of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula at HCU, as also over imposing restrictions on the media, a statement released here said.
Prasad felt that "prima facie, the action of the HCU impinges on the freedom of the press", the statement added.
Taking suo motu cognizance of the incident, the PCI Chairman ordered an immediate report from the Chief Secretary, Telangana, Vice Chancellor of HCU and SP, Hyderabad, the statement said.
