Terming the next general elections as an opportunity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to send credible representatives to the Lok Sabha, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today sought support for its nominees.
"We seek people's support for our party nominees to raise issues of common masses to the Parliament," former Chief Minister and PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said here while kick-starting the election campaign for party candidate Yash Pal Sharma for Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat.
Unlike other parts of the country, the coming general elections is not only an exercise for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to elect Lok Sabha members, but to send trustworthy representatives to the Parliament, who would represent peoples' aspirations with sincerity and dedication, he said.
"We are contesting the elections to give voice to peoples' wishes and aspirations," he said adding, "Like other parties, our representatives would not maintain silence in the Parliament over issues related to Jammu and Kashmir."
"PDP wants to send tested and credible representatives in the Parliament to take up peoples' issues with conviction and commitment," he said while introducing party nominee Sharma to workers.
Chiding the Congress leadership for failing to take stand on the issue of empowering Panchayats in the state, Mufti said despite remaining in power for nearly eleven years, the party deprived people of Jammu and Kashmir of their legitimate democratic rights.
Referring to statements by Congress leaders on 73rd and 74th amendments of the Constitution, he said, failure of the government to strengthen Panchayati Raj Institutions in the state was a clear indication that they were not serious in strengthening democracy at grass root level.
Speaking on the occasion, Yash Pal Sharma sought support of party workers and people.
