Hundreds of peasants from the neighbouring states of Delhi today took out a protest march in the national capital under the aegis of the All India Kisan Sabha, asking for remunerative prices for their produce, among other demands.
A delegation including Chairperson of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture Basudeb Acharia, CPI(M) Lok Sabha MP Saidul Haque and General Secretary and President of the AIKS, Hannan Mollah and Amra Ram respectively later submitted a detailed memorandum to the Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar pressing for their demands.
The demands also included settlement of arrears of sugarcane farmers and dilution of Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act and other related matters, the AIKS said in a statement.
The memorandum presented the peasant body's multi-point demands including appropriate Minimum Support Price (MSP) for the crops, among others.
"We hope the Ministry of Agriculture will consider these proposals seriously and take immediate steps to generate confidence and a sense of security amidst the cultivating peasantry," the memorandum said.
