Led by the vice-president (Bihar-Jharkhand) of the organization, Dharmchandra Poddar, the activists staged demonstration infront of the East Singhbhum district deputy commissioner's office here and demanded that the government should enact a stringent law to prevent anyone responsible for making the river dirty instead of spending crores of rupees for its cleaning.

Poddar said the government have been spending huge money per annum on account of cleaning operation of the river, which has already been declared as a "National River."

However, we strongly favour that the government should frame a stringent law that would ensure none would dare to pollute the river, which was fast shrinking and drying up due to the filth.

As the river has been declared a National river, it was the responsibility of the government to preserve and protect it, Poddar said.

The act should have the provision not only to initiate legal action but also penalise a person, if found guilty of making the river filthy, he said.

They also handed over a memorandum to the deputy commissioner.
