The elections for the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation are scheduled to be held on August 12. The petitioner, Mira Bhayander Jagruti Sangathana, approached the court seeking to postpone the elections because of Ramzaan Eid and Shravan.

According to their petition, around 40 per cent population of Mira Bhayander is Muslim and the remaining comprise of Gujaratis and north Indians.

The trust has claimed that with such holy month on, people might not go to cast their vote.

The petitioners had also made a representation to the assistant Election Commissioner on July 6 seeking postponement of the elections, but the same was rejected.

A division bench of Justices S A Bobade and Mridula Bhatkar, however, refused to interfere and said, "Nothing stops people following Ramzaan and Shravan from going to cast their vote."

Dismissing the petition, the court said elections cannot be postponed on such grounds.
